Flash HTMLEntities Suck

Thursday, January 8th, 2009 | Blog

So I ran into this issue at work where the client was trying to pass in HTML entities and expecting Flash to just take it in stride. Apparently Flash only handles about 5 different kinds of entities of the 300 or so. So to get around this I made a function to convert all the HTML entities to number entities. So if anyone else runs into this issue they can take advantage of this useful tool. Enjoy!

public function convertHTMLEntities(str:String):String {
	var htmlEntities:Array = [" ", "¡", "¢", "£", "¤", "¥", "¦", "§", "¨", "©", "ª", "«", "¬", "", "®", "¯", "°", "±", "²", "³", "´", "µ", "¶", "·", "¸", "¹", "º", "»", "¼", "½", "¾", "¿", "À", "Á", "Â", "Ã", "Ä", "Å", "Æ", "Ç", "È", "É", "Ê", "Ë", "Ì", "Í", "Î", "Ï", "Ð", "Ñ", "Ò", "Ó", "Ô", "Õ", "Ö", "×", "Ø", "Ù", "Ú", "Û", "Ü", "Ý", "Þ", "ß", "à", "á", "â", "ã", "ä", "å", "æ", "ç", "è", "é", "ê", "ë", "ì", "í", "î", "ï", "ð", "ñ", "ò", "ó", "ô", "õ", "ö", "÷", "ø", "ù", "ú", "û", "ü", "ý", "þ", "ÿ", "ƒ", "Α", "Β", "Γ", "Δ", "Ε", "Ζ", "Η", "Θ", "Ι", "Κ", "Λ", "Μ", "Ν", "Ξ", "Ο", "Π", "Ρ", "Σ", "Τ", "Υ", "Φ", "Χ", "Ψ", "Ω", "α", "β", "γ", "δ", "ε", "ζ", "η", "θ", "ι", "κ", "λ", "μ", "ν", "ξ", "ο", "π", "ρ", "ς", "σ", "τ", "υ", "φ", "χ", "ψ", "ω", "ϑ", "ϒ", "ϖ", "•", "…", "′", "″", "‾", "⁄", "℘", "ℑ", "ℜ", "™", "ℵ", "←", "↑", "→", "↓", "↔", "↵", "⇐", "⇑", "⇒", "⇓", "⇔", "∀", "∂", "∃", "∅", "∇", "∈", "∉", "∋", "∏", "∑", "−", "∗", "√", "∝", "∞", "∠", "∧", "∨", "∩", "∪", "∫", "∴", "∼", "≅", "≈", "≠", "≡", "≤", "≥", "⊂", "⊃", "⊄", "⊆", "⊇", "⊕", "⊗", "⊥", "⋅", "⌈", "⌉", "⌊", "⌋", "⟨", "⟩", "◊", "♠", "♣", "♥", "♦", """, "&", "<", ">", "Œ", "œ", "Š", "š", "Ÿ", "ˆ", "˜", " ", " ", " ", "‌", "‍", "‎", "‏", "–", "—", "‘", "’", "‚", "“", "”", "„", "†", "‡", "‰", "‹", "›", "€"];

The reason

str = str.split(“&”).join(“&”);

is because if the ‘&’ is encoded, then none of the other entities will be properly converted. So it’s done first to ensure the rest are handled correctly. Also I have the

new XMLDocument(str).firstChild.nodeValue;

line in because this can also help fix any html related issues and I figured it couldn’t hurt to be cautious.

Hello, I can’t understand how to add your blog ( blog.coursevector.com ) in my rss reader

Why are you converting to an xml document before outputting the str?

Like I mentioned before, converting to an XMLDocument then grabbing the text from that is also a quick way to parse some html entities (it’s not perfect). I am just doing this as a safeguard incase I missed anything. If you feel that it’s a bit redundant feel free to delete that line.

Here is the post I pulled that XML line from for reference purposes.

You’ve got an error in your, line 2 – you have “”" as one of the entities – I changed to ‘”‘ and it worked great otherwise.. :)
